Anja Schüppert

Natural Sciences Fellow (Human Brains and Societies), SCAS.
Assistant Professor of European Languages and Cultures, University of Groningen

Anja Schüppert holds a PhD in Linguistics and is currently employed as Assistant Professor at
the Center for Language and Cognition and the Department of European Languages and Cultures
at the University of Groningen. Her research explores various aspects in the field of multilingualism,
including multilingual speech perception and production, language processing, and language attitudes
in multilingual settings. A special focus in her research lies on the use of English as a lingua franca
and the use of receptive multilingualism. She has investigated opportunities and challenges of inter-
Scandinavian communication and intelligibility (grannspråksförståelse) using methods such as the
matched-guise technique or event-related potentials (ERPs).

Her current research line focuses on students' academic performance in programmes that are taught
using English-medium instruction (EMI). Using eye tracking, exams, attitude questions and other
measures, she explores the effect that language of instruction has on students' focus of attention
and their content learning in native language (L1) versus second language (L2) teaching environments.
Schüppert has published numerous articles in journals such as the International Journal of Bilingualism,
Speech Communication,
the Journal of English for Academic Purposes, and the Journal of English as
a Lingua Franca.
At SCAS, she will work on a study that uses 360° lecture recordings and head-
mounted virtual reality devices to explore students' attention.
