Alexis Lavail

Thunberg Fellow, SCAS.
Postdoctoral Researcher in Astronomy, Uppsala University

Alexis Lavail is a Thunberg Fellow at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study and a Postdoctoral
Researcher in Astronomy at Uppsala University. His research is focussed on the study of stars and
their magnetic fields, as well as exoplanets — planets orbiting other stars than the Sun.

Lavail is also participating in the building, testing, and installation of the cutting-edge high-resolution
spectrograph CRIRES+ for the Very Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory (Chile).
This new instrument, planned to be in operation in early 2021, will enable unprecedented studies of stars
and exoplanets. Of particular interest to Lavail are the characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres, and
solving the observational challenges that this objective entails.

Lavail completed his Ph.D. in astronomy at Uppsala University and his undergraduate studies in astronomy
and space-engineering at Aix-Marseille Université and at l'Observatoire de Paris.
