New Article by SCAS Principal Björn Wittrock

Björn Wittrock’s recent article “Understanding a Divide: A Symposium on a Fateful Public Conversation,
Davos 1929” is now available online at Taylor & Francis Online. The article is one of six articles resulting
from the Ernst Cassirer Symposium that was held at the Swedish Collegium on 21-22 January 2013. The
focus of the event was on Peter E. Gordon’s book, Continental Divide: Heidegger, Cassirer, Davos (Harvard
University Press, 2010) - the idea was to invite scholars to comment upon and take a stance vis-à-vis
Gordon’s volume, as well as to look ahead and to identify critical areas for a sustained engagement in the spirit
of Ernst Cassirer with key areas in the social and human sciences. In addition to Wittrock’s introductory article
and an article by Peter Gordon, four of the comments on Gordon’s book appear online, namely those by Hans
Joas, Hans-Peter Krüger, Hans-Jörg Rheinberger and Stephan Steiner. The articles may appear in a special issue
of the journal History of European Ideas later this year.

The 2013 Ernst Cassirer Symposium was the concluding event of the Fellowship programme in memory of Ernst
Cassirer that was pursued at the Collegium during a period of six years, in collaboration with Wissenschaftskolleg
zu Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, with funding from VolkswagenStiftung.
