Five Promising Researchers Have Been Admitted to Pro Futura Scientia XI

Five promising researchers have been selected Pro Futura Scientia Fellows in the eleventh admittance
round of the programme. A total of 27 scholars, affiliated to 21 universities/research institutes in nine
countries, were nominated to this year's round. After the usual rigorous selection procedure, the decision
was formally made by the Board of Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, at the recommendation of the SCAS Pro
Futura Scientia Programme Selection Committee. The selections were based on criteria such as excellent
research profiles and the scholars’ ability to work independently and with ground-breaking results. In
addition to nominations by eight Swedish universities, candidates were also nominated by the Universities
of Cambridge, Copenhagen and Tartu.

The new Pro Futura Scientia Fellows are:
Helen Anne Curry, Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge
(nominated by the University of Cambridge)
Terje Falck-Ytter, Department of Women's and Children's Health, Karolinska Institutet, and
Department of Psychology, Uppsala University (nominated by Uppsala University)
Hazem Kandil, Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge (nominated by the University of
Cambridge)
Aryo Makko, Department of History, Stockholm University (nominated by Stockholm University)
Julia Uddén, Department of Neurobiology of Language, Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics,
Nijmegen (nominated by Stockholm University)

The Pro Futura Scientia programme, initiated in 1999 by the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study
and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, has proved to be an attractive career path for promising young
scholars. Thanks to the carefully designed structure of the programme, the talented scholars are given
optimal scope for developing as researchers, over several years and in stimulating environments. The
programme thus attracts promising scholars not only from Sweden, but also an increasing number of
prominent young scholars from the international arena enter the Swedish university and research
system this way.

The important role that the programme has come to play over the years is also shown through the large
number of researchers previously admitted to the programme who have been appointed professors during
(6 scholars) or after (8 scholars) their time as Pro Futura Scientia Fellows, and/or have been elected
members of scholarly academies and societies and joined research councils and key bodies at universities.

The new Pro Futura Scientia XI scholars will receive their diplomas during a ceremony at the Swedish
Collegium for Advanced Study in September.
