News from the SCAS Community: Academies; Prizes & Awards
Professor Sir David Cannadine has been elected International Honorary Member of the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He joins as a member of section 2/History of
Class IV - Humanities and Arts.
Cannadine is Dodge Professor of History at Princeton University and President of the British Academy. He was a Fellow in residence at the Collegium in the academic year 2017-18.
Professor Gary Alan Fine has been elected Member of Class III - Social Sciences of the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He joins as a member of section 5/Anthropology, Archaeology, Sociology, Demography and Geography.
Fine is James E. Johnson Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University and was a
Fellow at SCAS in the
spring of 2003.
Professor Dame Marilyn Strathern has been awarded the 2018 International Balzan Prize
for Social Anthropology. She receives the prize "[f]or the profoundly innovative character
of her contributions to social and cultural anthropology, and especially for her critique of
Western understandings of gender and equality, and her associated explorations of how
familiar concepts work differently in different contexts."
Strathern is Professor em. of
Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. She is
a Member of the Academic Senate of the Swedish Collegium.
