The Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) is participating in the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI), taking place at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada from 1–5 June.

SCAS Principal Christina Garsten is attending the meeting in her capacity as a member of the CHCI Advisory Board, participating in discussions concerning the future development of the consortium and the broader role of humanities and social science research in addressing contemporary global challenges.

This year's meeting, Building the Present We Want, focuses on the major challenges shaping contemporary societies, including artificial intelligence, climate change, democratic resilience, academic freedom and global security. Bringing together humanities scholars, center directors and public intellectuals from around the world, the meeting explores how the humanities and social sciences can contribute to understanding these developments and to building more just, sustainable and inclusive futures.

For SCAS, participation in CHCI forms part of a broader commitment to international collaboration and engagement with discussions concerning the future conditions of research, higher education and knowledge production. As a member of the CHCI Advisory Board, Christina Garsten contributes to ongoing conversations about how humanities and social science institutions can work together to strengthen scholarship, academic freedom and international exchange in a rapidly changing world.

Founded in 1988, CHCI is one of the world's largest international networks for humanities centers and institutes, bringing together more than 300 member organizations in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Pacific Rim.
