BOOK TALK - Cultural History and the Anthropocene: Old Turns, New Encounters
Brita Brenna (University of Oslo), Anders Ekström (SCAS & Uppsala University) and Marie-Theres Federhofer (UiT/the Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø) in conversation with Erik Isberg (University of Copenhagen; moderator) about their new book Cultural History and the Anthropocene: Old Turns, New Encounters (Bloomsbury Academic, 2026).

How does the notion of the Anthropocene impact the way we write cultural history? And how can cultural history contribute to the task of turning the abstract Anthropocene into an historical, communicative, and actionable category? This volume is a critical overview of interdisciplinary research on the cultural history of the Anthropocene which introduces readers to the key conceptual and theoretical challenges of Anthropocene debates, and analyses a variety of case studies, to highlight how ethnography and cultural history can make certain processes visible and historically tangible. It also explores critical approaches to Anthropocene discourse, and the challenges it may pose to alternative styles of cultural history. Overall, this volume offers a synthesis of conceptual, historical and critical approaches, that when combined provide a detailed overview of the latest research surrounding the cultural history of the Anthropocene.
