Judith Becker focusses on intercultural encounters in the history of Christianity. She has worked on migrant churches in the 16th century, on German speaking missions in South India in the 19th century and on methodological questions and new paradigms for the study of the history of Christianity in a global context.

She conducts research on the "Young Ecumenical Movement" – Christian internationalism in times of nationalism and colonialism, 1880s–1930s. At the turn of the 20th century, Christian youth organisations like the YMCA and the World Student Christian Federation advocated for a global community that transcended national and confessional boundaries. Member organisations from different parts of the world joined together in these associations. Yet, nationalisms, wars and colonialism threatened to tear them apart. How did they navigate these tensions?

Judith Becker is in residence early November - mid-December 2025.
