FAQs (Short-term Research Stays)

Here you will find FAQs regarding the Short-term Research Stays 2024-25.

Update: 20 November 2024

When can I submit an application?
Applications for the academic year 2024-2025 can be submitted between 1 April 2024 and 28 February 2025.

Can I apply to more than one programme?
Applicants are welcome to apply to more than one programme as long as the eligibility criteria are met.

Can I submit an application that includes two or more possible date ranges for the stay?
Applicants are encouraged to list more than one possible date range in their applications.

Can I apply for a short-term research stay if I have already been a Fellow at SCAS?
If you have already been a Fellow, but not a short-term researcher, you are welcome to apply for a short-term research stay without any restrictions.

Can I apply for a short-term research stay if I have already been a short-term researcher at SCAS?

If you have already been a short-term researcher (no matter the length of your stay), and wish to apply for a new short-term research stay, at least three years must have passed between the end of the academic year you were at SCAS and the beginning of the academic year you wish to be at SCAS.

For example, if you were at SCAS sometime during 2023-2024, the earliest academic year you can apply for is 2027-2028.

Are short-term research stays offered every semester?
There is no set number of short-term research stays. Various circumstances, such as the availability of office space, may change suddenly and we cannot provide information in advance about whether short-term stays will be offered a specific semester.

Are there any stipends for short-term researchers?
It is assumed that short-term researchers will cover the costs for their stays (such as salary, accommodation, travel). In some instances, we may be able to provide some funding. The availability of funding depends on various circumstances, and we cannot provide information in advance about whether funding can be offered.

Can the Collegium assist with accommodation?
Short-term researchers are responsible for making sure they have accommodation. Depending on availability, we may be able to assist with accommodation. We cannot provide information in advance about whether assistance with finding accommodation may be possible a specific semester.

Can the Collegium assist with travel arrangements and visas?
Short-term researchers are responsible for all practical preparations, such as travel arrangements and visas. If you are not sure whether you may need a visa, please consult the Swedish Migration Agency External link, opens in new window.. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that there is enough time to secure visas etc. before a stay takes place.

Are there any guidelines as to what to include in the description of the research project or what kind of project I can work on?
I
t is up to the applicants to decide what their project proposals should look like and what kind of research project it should be (article, monograph, grant proposal, review paper and so on). There is no set format for the description of the research project, apart from the length, and there are no guidelines as to what to include in it.

Can the Collegium give advice about research topics or what programmes would be the best match?
It is up to the applicants to decide what they would like to work on, and which programme (or programmes) matches their research topic. The General Fellowship Programme is very general while the Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme and the Global Horizons Fellowship Programme are more specific (please see the Call for Applications.)

When will applicants be notified of the results?
Applications are assessed on a rolling basis. Since there is no set number of short-term research stays, we do not know in advance how quickly a reply can be given. And we cannot say anything about the typical length of time it takes to make a determination about an applicant.

However, applicants who have applied for a short-term stay in the autumn only will be given a reply through Varbi no later than 31 October 2024. And applicants who have applied for a short-term stay in the autumn and/or the spring will be given a reply through Varbi no later than 31 March 2025.
