Academic Life
An overview of the academic life at SCAS

Part of being a fellow at an institute for advanced study is taking part in conversations across disciplinary and national boundaries. Fellows are therefore expected to take part in all activities during their time at the Collegium. The weekly fellows’ seminars serve as a focal point for our shared activities. These are normally held on Tuesdays at 10.15 a.m. SCAS also arranges other events, such as concerts, workshops and symposia, which provide opportunities for fellows to interact with each other and to meet with members of the Swedish academic community.
Lunch is served Monday to Friday at 12.30 in the lunch room on the ground floor of Linneanum. Lunches are an essential part of the Collegium’s scholarly community and provide an opportunity for discussion and socializing.
Fully equipped personal offices are located in Linneanum, Prefektvillan and Villa Lugnet, and are available to fellows twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The Collegium is normally staffed between nine a.m. and five p.m. on weekdays during term time.
SCAS organizes excursions for the fellows to places of academic and cultural interest in the Uppsala–Stockholm region, as well as social activities, such as city tours and visits to local museums.
The academic year at SCAS runs from early September to mid-June, with one-week breaks in late October–early November and late February, and a two-week spring break coinciding with Easter.

Other Services
SCAS provides resident fellows a range of housing options, from small studio flats to fully equipped larger flats for families, including internet services.
Fellows have access to the library facilities of Uppsala University Library. Several branches of the library are within walking distance of the Collegium. Books can be delivered to and from the Collegium. The Collegium also has a small reference library on the fourth floor of Linneanum. The Fellow Library in the Green Room contains books written by former fellows as well as other volumes with a connection to SCAS.
Fellows also have access to fully equipped seminar rooms in Linneanum, Prefektvillan and Villa Lugnet. They can also make use of the Thunberg Lecture Hall (Thunbergssalen) for workshops and conferences, depending on availability.
The Collegium offers a Swedish language course for fellows and their partners.
