Professor Christina Garsten, Principal of the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS), has been appointed Ushioda Fellow at Tokyo College, University of Tokyo, for a five-year term.

The fellowship will involve short-term stays at Tokyo College over the five-year period. As an Ushioda Fellow, Professor Garsten will take a proactive role in working with and providing leadership to early-career researchers at Tokyo College, as well as contributing suggestions and support for the College’s further development.

The appointment connects closely with Professor Garsten’s longstanding commitment to supporting early-career researchers and creating opportunities for exchange across career stages, disciplines, and institutions. Examples of this commitment include the SCAS Academic Leadership Programme (SALP), which supports Pro Futura Scientia Fellows in developing their academic leadership, and the North Sea Dialogue, whose most recent workshop explored the future of academic freedom for early-career scholars. These are just two examples of her broader work to create environments in which younger scholars can develop their academic networks, exchange ideas and engage with researchers across disciplines and career stages.
