CAT
Constructive Advanced Thinking
The Constructive Advanced Thinking (CAT) programme aims to support small groups of outstanding early-career researchers who are conducting basic research dedicated to developing new ideas for understanding and addressing current or emerging societal challenges. The programme also aims to support the transformation of these ideas into real-world action and to foster networks of advanced thinking.
The CAT programme supports research groups consisting of three to five individuals, led by an early-career researcher from any discipline and possibly including PhD students, to work on their project for a duration up to three years. To enable them to discuss and further develop their ideas, the groups are invited to spend short periods (up to two weeks) at participating institutes, where they also have the opportunity to interact with the fellows in residence at the institutes and with local research communities. With few guidelines and a very light application process, CAT is designed to maximize the creativity of the groups.
The CAT concept was developed within the framework of the Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study (NetIAS), of which SCAS was a founding member in 2004. The initiative was launched in 2019 and is currently supported by 25 Institutes for Advanced Study across Europe.
