Anders Ekström received his PhD from Uppsala University in 1994 and has held permanent and visiting positions at research institutes and universities in Sweden, Norway, Finland and the UK. He is a former fellow of SCAS (1999) and CRASSH, Cambridge University (2013). Between 2014 and 2020, Ekström served as Research Dean at the Faculty of Arts at Uppsala University. He has extensive experience of academic leadership, research evaluation and policy development, with a particular commitment to promoting integrative research across the human, social and natural sciences.

Ekström has published broadly on modern cultural, intellectual and media history for more than thirty years, specializing in the long 19th century. Some of his most recent books are the edited volumes Times of History, Times of Nature: Temporalization and the Limits of Modern Knowledge (with S. Bergwik; Berghahn Books 2022) and The Humanities and the Modern Politics of Knowledge (with H. Östh Gustafsson; Amsterdam UP 2022).

In the last decade, the main focus of Ekström's research has been on cultural processes of temporalization, theories of historical time, and late-modern experiences of anthropogenic climate change as a crisis of modern temporality. At SCAS, Ekström will work to develop a thematic research track on temporalization and temporal governance in close collaboration with existing programs at SCAS and beyond.
