Charlotta Friedner Parrat is a theorist specialising in issues of war, peace, and international order, with a particular interest in changes in international order. She earned her PhD in political science from Uppsala University in 2017 with a thesis titled Change, Institutions, and International Organisations, and worked at Uppsala University and Mälardalen University before her tenure at the Swedish Defence University. Her previous works include “On the Evolution of Primary Institutions of International Society” (International Studies Quarterly, 2017), “Change in International Society: How Not to Recreate the First Debate of International Relations” (International Studies Review, 2020), and “Change in International Order: An Institutional Analysis! (European Journal of International Security, 2024).

As a scholar of war studies, Friedner Parrat is particularly interested in how the international order is reproduced or changed in the everyday practices of international leaders and bureaucrats, and how these processes take shape in relation to war and peace. She studies this both in the present era and with regard to the historical processes leading up to the present international order. While in residence at SCAS, she will work on a monograph titled Change and International Order, theorising how various international orders have overlapped and interacted during the last 500 years. The book pays particular attention to how the institutions upholding those orders have reinforced or conflicted with each other, leading to processes of recreation, adaptation, or transformation.
