Erik Lindberg is Professor of History at Uppsala University. He graduated in Economic History from Uppsala University in 2001. His scholarly work focuses on early modern and 19th-century European social and economic history, with particular emphasis on how institutions affect economic development and the lived experiences of ordinary people in historical contexts. Lindberg has held various leadership positions at the university, including Head of the Department of History and Dean of the Faculty of Arts. His most recent publication is “Fattigdom som förlust av förmåga: Boende i jordkulor, kojor och annan fattigbebyggelse på den svenska landsbygden 1830–1900” (Poverty as capability deprivation: Shacks, earth huts, and other poor housing in rural Sweden, 1830–1900), Historisk tidskrift, 2026.

At SCAS Erik Lindberg will conduct research on the relations between employers and servants in rural Sweden between 1833 and 1926, a period when labour relations in some sectors were governed by the Master and Servants Act. In particular, he will study how economic compensation could be used in tandem with elements of coercion in labour markets for agricultural workers and domestic servants.
