Maijastina Kahlos holds the title of Docent at the University of Helsinki, where she received her master’s degree in history (1991) and her PhD in Classics (1998). Kahlos’ research focuses broadly on migration and mobility in the ancient Mediterranean world, Graeco-Roman religions, the Christianisation of the late Roman Empire, and women in Late Antiquity. Her current research project “In usus imperii: Encountering Migrants and Using ‘Barbarians’ in the Late Roman World (300–500 CE) (USUS)” looks at the mechanisms by which the Romans dealt with migrants in Late Antiquity.

Kahlos is the author of Barbarians as the Religious Other in the Late Roman World (Edinburgh University Press 2026) and Religious Dissent in Late Antiquity (Oxford University Press 2020). She also co-edited Women in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages (Brepols 2025) and Slavery in the Late Antique World, 150–700 CE (Cambridge University Press 2022). She worked as a research fellow at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies in 2023–24, at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge in 2021–22, and at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies in 2011–14 and 2019–21. Kahlos loves writing books, blog entries and podcasts on ancient history for a general audience.
