Alezini Loxa is a legal scholar whose work focuses on EU law, migration, legal history and sustainability. She holds a PhD in EU law from Lund University, Sweden, and an LL.M. and LL.B. from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Before becoming a Pro Futura Scientia Fellow, she was an Emile Noël Research Fellow at the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law and Justice at NYU, USA.

Loxa’s PhD thesis was awarded the 2023 Oscar II Prize for best thesis in the Lund Faculty of Law, the 2024 Lund University Agenda 2030 Honourable Mention for interdisciplinary research on sustainable development by early-career scholars, and the EGLP 2024 Thesis Prize for the best doctoral public law thesis characterized by its European dimension. A revised version of her dissertation has been published as a monograph with the title Sustainability and EU Migration Law – Tracing the History of a Contemporary Concept (CUP 2025). She has also co-edited the volume The Reasoning of the Court of Justice of the EU: A Normative Assessment (OUP 2025).

As a Pro Futura Fellow, Alezini Loxa will be working on a project that advances a new field of historical-materialist critique in EU law. The project’s central claim is that access to residence and social rights in the EU (for citizens and non-citizens alike) has historically depended on the intersection of nationality and economic contribution – two parameters that together make up the normative foundation of EU migration law. Using history, legal dogmatics and critical theory, the project will offer an account of EU migration law that can explain hierarchies of migration status by showing how these criteria intersect.
