In 1999, the Swedish Collegium and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond set up a cutting-edge research programme for promising early-career scholars in the humanities and social sciences: the Pro Futura Scientia Programme. The idea is to provide optimal conditions for young researchers and give them a chance to pursue curiosity-driven research for a five-year period.

Candidates are nominated by Swedish universities. The nominating universities are encouraged to propose candidates not only from their own university but also from other universities.

After a rigorous selection procedure, five nominees are admitted to the programme each year. Pro Futura Fellows remain associated with their nominating university and additionally spend one to one-and-a-half years at the Swedish Collegium. They also spend a year abroad at a university department or institute.

Researchers who have participated in the Pro Futura Scientia Programme have gone on to play an important role in the Swedish academic system. They have taken up distinguished professorships, been elected members of scholarly academies, including the Young Academy of Sweden, and joined national research councils and governing bodies of universities.

The nomination and selection process for the Pro Futura Scientia Programme is administered by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) External link, opens in new window.. If you have any questions about the process, please contact RJ. The members of the RJ Selection Committe are listed here.
