Rashna Darius Nicholson

Rashna Darius Nicholson is Assistant Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Hong Kong
(HKU). Prior to joining HKU, she held a research fellowship within the European Research Council
Developing Theatre project, at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich. She received
her PhD (summa cum laude) in Theatre Studies at the LMU Munich and completed an MA in Perfor-
mance Studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the University of Copenhagen.

Nicholson’s recent work on colonial and postcolonial South Asian performance, theatre historiography,
and cultural development has been published in Theatre Survey, Theatre Research International, Ethnic
and Racial Studies
, The Routledge Companion to Theatre and Performance Historiography,and The
Methuen Drama Handbook of Theatre History and Historiography
. Her monograph The Colonial Public
and the Parsi Stage: The Making of the Theatre of Empire (1853-1893),
which traces the origins and
early development of the colonial South Asian theatre, was published in 2021 by Palgrave Macmillan.

During her time at the Collegium, Nicholson will be working on her second monograph on the impact
of the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations on theatre in the Global South during and after the Cold War.
