Linn Holmberg (Incoming Fellow 2024-25)

Associate Professor in History of Ideas, Stockholm University

Linn Holmberg is specialized in  information management and concepts of knowledge in early modern
Europe. During her time at SCAS in the Fall of 2024, she will work on a monograph devoted to the
eighteenth-century ‘Dictionary Craze’. The book studies the reception and cultural impact of the alpha-
betically organized reference-work during the time of its ‘big break’. By analyzing accounts in twenty
learned journals – printed in five countries 1665–1789 – Holmberg charts out the intellectual debates
following the genre’s explosive rise in popularity, and above all, the fears and hopes that it raised about
knowledge in the age of Enlightenment.
