Christer Nordlund

Christer Nordlund received his Ph.D. in History of Science and Ideas from Umeå University in 2001. His
doctoral dissertation, Det upphöjda landet: vetenskapen, landhöjningsfrågan och kartläggningen av Sveriges
förflutna 1860–1930
(The Elevated Land: Science, Land Elevation and the Formulation of a Swedish Past,
1860–1930, 2001; 2 edn. 2002), received awards from the Swedish Society for History of Science and the
Royal Skyttean Society. Nordlund was a Visiting Rausing Scholar at the Office for History of Science,
Uppsala University, in 2003; a Visiting STINT Scholar (the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation
in Research and Higher Education) at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of
Cambridge and a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, both in 2004; and a Visiting Scholar
at the Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte in Berlin in 2010–11. He was a SCAS Fellow in 2007
and 2011. Nordlund received the Young Researcher Award from Umeå University in 2008 and was appointed
Professor of History of Science and Ideas at Umeå University in 2010. He was elected a member of the Young
Academy of Sweden in 2011.

Nordlund’s research focuses on the history and social studies of science and technology as well as on environ-
mental history. He has conducted research on the history of environmental and field sciences and has also
investigated the history of endocrinology and the links between science, medicine and industry. He has managed
research programmes on the history and communication of biofuels and on the development of forestry and
forest science. Nordlund is currently Director of Umeå Studies in Science, Technology and Environmental Studies,
an interdisciplinary research group. He has edited several books, including Topos (2006); Kamerajägaren (The
Camera Hunter, 2010); and Vägar till vetenskapen (Paths to Science, 2013), and he is the author of a number of
articles in international books and journals. His latest monograph, Hormones of Life: Endocrinology, the
Pharmaceutical Industry, and the Dream of a Remedy for Sterility, 1930–1970
, was published by Science History Publications in 2011. A new book entitled Motorspriten kommer! En historia om alternativa drivmedel (Alcohol
Fuel Is the Future! A History of Alternative Fuels) will be published in 2014.
